New metrics to define value of wellness in retirement communities

[Back to releases]

The ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks measure the wellness program’s contribution to the organization’s mission and business objectives.

VANCOUVER--Today the International Council on Active Aging and the ProMatura Group announced the release of the ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks. For the first time, industrywide metrics will capture the contribution and value of wellness—lifestyle activities, fitness and recreation—to a retirement property’s mission and bottom line.

“For the owners of retirement communities, it has been challenging to determine how an investment in wellness will return to the property,” explains Colin Milner, CEO of International Council on Active Aging. “Now, with these potentially industry-changing metrics, organizations will have the ability to analyze the contribution wellness has on their bottomline, especially given the current economic environment. This information is even more important for advance planning, as owners decide not only what will attract residents 10 years from now, but what will keep them engaged.”

To participate in the ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks, retirement communities with independent living and assisted living enter information into an online system. In return, communities receive individual reports that track capacity and results over time. Plus, each benchmarking organization becomes part of a national database.

“The wellness benchmarks database provides us the ability to learn which components have the greatest impact on satisfaction and on the resident’s self-assessment of health,” points out Margaret Wylde, President & CEO of ProMatura Group, LLC. “Just these two indicators will provide valuable information for developing effective wellness programs that maximize the use of resources and achieves the best outcomes for residents.”

When leaders of the wellness program in retirement communities participate, they have a system for consistent reporting for quality control and improvement; access to a national database for comparisons; and an ability to learn the best practices in active aging. The more communities that participate, the more valuable the benchmarks become—a value that will increase over the years.
