[LEGAL AID] Two new Florida laws protect people with dementia
Two laws that went into effect on October 1 in Florida are aimed at protecting people with dementia by enabling better communication with law enforcement officers.
House Bill 801 required the Department of Law Enforcement to work with the state Department of Elder Affairs to establish an online, continued employment training for law enforcement officers. The training includes recognizing and appropriately responding to dementia behavioral symptoms such as wandering, using alternatives to physical restraints and identifying signs of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
The second law, Bill CS/CS/HB 341, allows an applicant to include a diagnosis for a disability or disorder such as dementia on their motor vehicle registration form.
