[AYAYAY!] US government releases artificial intelligence strategic plan

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released its artificial intelligence (AI) strategic plan, which provides a framework and roadmap to ensure the responsible use of AI to improve people’s lives. HHS’s objective is to set in motion a coordinated public-private approach to improving the quality, safety, efficiency, accessibility, equitability, and outcomes in health and human services through the innovative, safe, and responsible use of AI.

The Administration for Community Living said it is looking forward to collaboration across sectors to advance the use of AI to empower older adults and people with disabilities and the individuals and organizations that serve them.

Key highlights of the strategic plan include:

  • Catalyzing health AI innovation and adoption to unlock new ways to improve people’s lives
  • Promoting trustworthy AI development and ethical and responsible use to avoid potential harm
  • Democratizing AI technologies and resources to promote access
  • Cultivating AI-empowered workforces and organization cultures to effectively and safely use AI

The plan's overview includes brief summaries that discuss context, opportunities for the application of AI, trends in the industry and across HHS, potential risks to AI adoption and implementation, and action plans in brief that include policy, education, funding, and infrastructure efforts aligned to the four goals articulated above.

The full strategic plan, also available as a slide presentation, is deliberately expansive to provide context and tangible examples for readers seeking a more detailed orientation, according to HHS. This version includes a more comprehensive discussion of opportunities, trends, use cases and risks, and full action plans.
