Begin the adventure of Active Aging Week

Active Aging Week is an annual health promotion event held each year during the last week of September. The weeklong observance celebrates adults ages 50 and older as fully participating members of society and promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthier lifestyle. It also highlights the ability of older adults to live well, regardless of age or health conditions. In 2014, Active Aging Week will promote an adventurous spirit with the theme “Let the adventure begin.”

Champions of active aging: Role models encourage change by Jenifer Milner

Many older adults today lead lives that challenge society’s perceptions of aging. Whether participating in theater, volunteering in the community or being physically active, these individuals tend to enjoy more robust health and lead more vibrant lives than ageist stereotypes would suggest possible. As they go about their daily lives, they demonstrate the potential of people to engage in life fully at any age, despite challenges. They show what is possible with active aging. The ICAA Champions program enlists proponents of active aging as educators and role models.

The active-aging industry and wellness are concepts being developed right now, among individuals and organizations serving older adults. The new world of whole-person wellness means that traditional departments and jobs may no longer fit well with a culture of engaging, meaningful occupations and integration among the dimensions of wellness. ICAA has created a roadmap to guide hiring, professional development and succession planning for organizations forming a wellness culture.
