Contrary to popular belief, taking a low-dose aspirin once a day does not reduce the risk of thinking and memory problems caused by mild cognitive impairment or probable Alzheimer's disease, nor does it slow the rate of cognitive decline. Because daily aspirin is also associated with risks, including bleeding in the brain, providers should be aware and alert constituents about the study findings.

CMS expands telehealth coverage during COVID-19 outbreak

The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will temporarily pay clinicians to provide telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries across the US, effective retroactively to March 6, 2020. A range of healthcare providers, including doctors, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers, are now able to offer telehealth services, and beneficiaries can receive telehealth services in any healthcare facility including a physician's office, hospital, nursing home or rural health clinic, as well as from their homes, according to the emergency declaration. Further, patients will now be able to access their doctors using a wider range of communication tools including telephones that have audio and video capabilities, making it easier for beneficiaries and doctors to connect.

A study that includes investigators from the US National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that daily step counts were associated with lower mortality risk from all causes. Intermittent claudication is a hallmark of peripheral artery disease (PAD), a common ailment in people over age 60 that is associated with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and physical inactivity. Symptoms include pain or discomfort in the muscles of the calf, thigh or buttocks while walking. Although various medications, such as vasodilators, can be used to relieve the pain, the best approach is exercise, UK researchers say. It's one more reason for organizations to get their constituents up and moving, and to see whether those with the condition can relieve it by physical activity alone.

In a study of close to 140,000 older Australians, researchers found strong evidence of links between certain food groups and memory loss and comorbid heart disease or diabetes. The findings point to a need for age-specific dietary guidelines, they say, and could serve as a heads-up to active-aging organizations and communities.
