Partnership creates a multidimensional week of opera by Rene Katsinas with Paul Houghtaling

When the director of the Opera Theatre at the University of Alabama (UA) called to inquire whether the residents of Capstone Village would be interested in participating in National Opera Week with their students, I was delighted to say “Yes!”

As with any performance, let’s start with the players.

During National Opera Week, opera companies and schools host free, accessible events to their communities with the goal of introducing new people to opera and maintaining the interest of opera lovers. The week is sponsored by OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

NuStep celebrates the 'Pinnacle' of wellness

The recipients of the 2012 NuStep Pinnacle Award are The Garlands of Barrington in Barrington, Illinois; and Granite Reef Senior Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition to a NuStep T5XR Recumbent Cross Trainer, each organization received airfare and a two-night hotel stay for a representative to attend the 2011 International Council on Active Aging Conference in Orlando, Florida. Steve Sarns, NuStep’s vice president of sales and marketing, presented commendations to these representatives at the December event.

Valle Verde commits to better the world with its Green Footprint program

Set in the foothills of Santa Barbara, California, Valle Verde is a nonprofit, continuing care retirement community owned and operated by American Baptist Homes of the West (ABHOW), a senior living provider based in Pleasanton. The Valle Verde living experience, according to the community’s website, emphasizes choice, individuality, a positive atmosphere and a commitment to environmental stewardship. Many improvements to the 60-acre campus have involved collaborative effort and innovative thinking about how to reduce the environmental impact on the community itself, as well as the world that surrounds it.

Among the most basic of all human activities, walking is essential to maintaining functional independence as we age. However, declining confidence, muscle fitness and proprioception (which allows us to sense body position in space) can threaten our ability to walk safely and thus stay independent. “Nordic” pole walking and pole exercise programs offer simple, effective options for regular physical activity participation, promoting health, function and independence in older adults.
