The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced that we are living in a global world with tremendous potential to connect people and organizations via technology. Reinforcing this perspective and aiming to maximize that potential, the non-profit Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), parent company of MobiHealthNews, recently launched the Digital Health Indicator. DHI is described as "an ecosystem that connects clinicians and provider teams with people, enabling (individuals) to manage their health and wellness using digital tools in a secure and private environment whenever and wherever care is needed." This is important because it moves all providers, in the US and elsewhere, into a global network.

The latest effort by tech firms to help thwart COVID-19 comes from an unusual partnership between rivals Google and Apple. A blog post on Google describes how the company is using aggregated, anonymized data to chart the spread of COVID-19 across 131 countries globally, highlighting the virus's movement across places such as retail and recreation, parks, groceries and pharmacies, workplaces, etc. The results are published in freely available Community Mobility reports.

CMS expands telehealth coverage during COVID-19 outbreak

The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will temporarily pay clinicians to provide telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries across the US, effective retroactively to March 6, 2020. A range of healthcare providers, including doctors, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers, are now able to offer telehealth services, and beneficiaries can receive telehealth services in any healthcare facility including a physician's office, hospital, nursing home or rural health clinic, as well as from their homes, according to the emergency declaration. Further, patients will now be able to access their doctors using a wider range of communication tools including telephones that have audio and video capabilities, making it easier for beneficiaries and doctors to connect.

Tech Talk: Online portal boosts diabetes self-management

As tech continues to make inroads in healthcare, increasing evidence suggests its use improves outcomes. In this case, a study of more than 111,000 patients with diabetes - about 53% men; 29% ages 65-74; and 20%, 75 or older - access to a self-management portal was associated with better medication adherence and glycemic control. Further, researchers found that portal use increased overall from close to 40,000 patients in April 2015 to close to 60,000 in December 2017.
