Published studies that match a set of review criteria (for example, an intervention with a control group) are chosen for comparison and rigorously evaluated for the quality of the research design and the results. Cardiovascular and resistance exercise are standard components of cardiac rehabilitation programs, as detailed in the “Core Components of Cardiac Rehabilitation/Secondary Prevention Programs: 2007 Update” published in the journal Circulation (115:2675-2682, May 2007).
