Midlife physical activity, healthy behaviors vital for active later life

In a study of close to 4,000 older adults (age range, 60-83; 25%, women). with accelerometer data, barriers associated with decreased physical activity and increased sedentary behavior in later life were already evident in midlife. This suggests that implementation in midlife of policies that integrate physical activity and other healthy behaviors may be an effective approach to promote an active lifestyle in older age, the authors said. The findings are especially important for independent living and for active-aging staff in midlife.

Frequent socializing may extend the lifespan of older people, suggests a recent study of more than 28,000 Chinese people. Socializing nearly every day seems to be the most beneficial for a long life, meaning active-aging organizations may want to increase their efforts to get constituents out of their homes and into relevant social groups.

Green, leafy vegetable consumption tied to fewer signs of AD

People who consume diets rich in green leafy vegetables as well as other vegetables, fruits, whole grains, olive oil, beans, nuts and fish may have fewer amyloid plaques and tau tangles in their brain--signs of Alzheimer's disease--than people who do not consume such diets, according to a recent study. The findings could inform meal offerings in active-aging organizations, as well as classes in nutrition.

Stats: 76% of adults 55+ use digital health

Active-aging organizations may want to pay more attention to their digital health platforms and infrastructure, as 2022 saw digital health adoption increases among groups that have long been underserved, according to the latest survey from Rock Health. Of note, the biggest year-over-year increases were seen among respondents ages 55+ (76%, up from 64% in 2021); those living in rural areas (73%, up from 60%); and respondents without health insurance at the time of the survey (50%, up from 37%)
