When asked where they wish to age, most adults choose their current homes. A new survey asked this question again, and found the same theme. But, what are the elements they want in their neighborhoods that make them attractive?

50+ Home buyers may be regaining confidence
An online survey was conducted among 1,004 people ages 25-65 in the United States. Almost three-quarters (74%) of the respondents felt the economy had improved in the last year. Among those 55 years and older, half (50%) are planning to purchase a new home in the future.

Laughter relieves stress, and maybe helps memory
Stress can raise levels of the hormone cortisol, and cortisol has been shown to affect memory and learning ability among older adults. Laughter and humor are ways to relieve stress. A presentation at the Experimental Biology annual meeting reported that a group of healthy people, average age 70 years, and another group with diabetes, average age 67 years, watched a 20-minute humorous video.

Boost physical activity levels to lower risk of heart attack
For 985 adults (average age 71 at baseline) participating in the community-based Cardiovascular Health Study, measurements of heart rate variability (differences in the time between one heartbeat and the next) were compared with levels of leisure-time physical activity. Recordings of heartbeats were taken over five years.

Go for seven servings a day of vegetables and fruit
In an effort to encourage people to eat more vegetables and fruit, the slogan “Five a Day” is used to set a goal for daily consumption. The Five-a-Day slogan has been adopted in the United States (Fruits and Veggies More Matters) and the United Kingdom (National Health Service), among other countries. New research suggests that eating two additional servings might lower risk of mortality.

Are families or friends more important for well-being?
After acknowledging that social connections are considered a requirement for well-being at older ages, the authors of a recent study posed a question. Since relationships with family members are obligatory, and relationships with friends are voluntary, is there a difference in how each contributes to feelings of well-being?
