Low back pain causes more disability around the world than any of the other 291 medical conditions cited in the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study, found a new analysis. At a global prevalence of 9.4%, low back pain (with and without pain radiating down the legs) was highest in terms of disability and sixth in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALY), an estimate of the years of “healthy” life lost due to a disability.

Self-esteem may lower stress to help protect the health of older adults

Background to a new study notes that self-esteem--a person’s sense of worth--may decline at older ages. Researchers were curious if lower levels of self-esteem might lead to changes in amounts of the hormone cortisol. Increased cortisol levels indicate stress, and long-term stress can lead to health conditions (American Psychological Association).
