Tech Talk: Smart blood glucose meter and app tied to better glycemic control

A retrospective analysis of real-world data from over 144,000 people with diabetes found improved glycemic metrics among those who used a Bluetooth-connected BGM together with a diabetes management digital app. The study's 180-day findings expand on the results from a 90-day timeframe first presented at the 82nd Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association in June 2022, and provide a rationale for possibly encouraging use of the device in active-aging communities.

Thai community program curbs family caregiver burden-9675

Thai community program curbs family caregiver burden

In developing countries, aging populations and lack of universal access to long-term care place the burden of care for older adults on their families. To mitigate this, researchers have implemented a community-integrated intermediary care model in Thailand. This service has proven effective in reducing caregiver burden and improving the functional ability and independence of older adults. The multi-pronged model includes care prevention activities, capacity building for family caregivers, and community respite services, and provides context for ongoing efforts to improve a global problem.

Physical activity level linked to risks of hospitalization-9667

Physical activity level linked to risks of hospitalization

An analysis of data from close to 81,000 UK Biobank participants (mean age, 62; 56%, women) who used accelerometers for a week showed that those with higher physical activity levels had lower risks of hospitalization across a broad range of health conditions. These findings suggest that aiming to increase moderate-to-vigorous physical activity by 20 minutes per day may be a useful non-drug intervention to reduce healthcare burdens and improve quality of life, the authors suggest. The findings could also provide motivation to get active-aging staff and constituents moving regularly.

UK prevention/enablement model boosts wellness, cuts costs

A collaboration among the Essex County Council, Active Essex, Sport for Confidence and Sport England showed various benefits, including increased physical activity and wellbeing among participants, and some decrease in doctors' visits, emergency calls and hospital trips. This reduction in service use was estimated to represent a cost saving of £365.23 per person, per year, according to a recent report on the outcomes of the Prevention and Enablement Model (PEM). The model demonstrates the value of collaboration among community organizations in improving constituents' wellness while reducing healthcare costs.

Stats: Half of US women forgo preventive health services-9639

Stats: Half of US women forgo preventive health services

A new Ipsos poll commissioned by the Alliance for Women's Health and Prevention (AWHP) reveals that nearly half of American women (45%) are forgoing preventive care services such as check-ups and screenings, and the inability to afford out-of-pocket costs is the most common reason (25%) cite for skipping this critical care. The survey of a US national sample of 3,204 women looked at women's experiences with preventive healthcare, the challenges they face accessing it and the disparities that exist. The information could be helpful to senior living organizations looking to encourage preventive strategies among their constituents, and to support those who are experiencing problems.
