DEIB survey, toolkit released for senior living

The first diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) survey and toolkit for senior living was released November 9. The survey, conducted by Ferguson Partners, collected information across the participating companies and reviews both the degree to which DEIB programs are deployed and the diversity of their respective staff. The survey also indicated opportunities for senior living companies to give more focus to DEIB efforts. The DEIB Toolkit was developed for interested companies to customize programs suited to their respective firms.

Leaders who listen, learn have more resilient teams

Leaders who encourage their employees to learn on the job and speak up with ideas and suggestions for change have teams that are more effective and resilient in the face of unexpected situations, according to research from Rice University, Houston, Texas and the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Although the study authors examined interactions interactions of 48 teams from five Canadian technology startups, the findings seem generalizable to other industries, including active aging.

School-based dementia education could deliver much needed empathy and understanding for older adults, as research from the University of South Australia shows it can significantly improve dementia knowledge and awareness among younger people. Although many organizations are aware of the need for intergenerational education of this type, the study could provide additional motivation for including such programs, particularly after the pandemic or, possibly, via technology right now.

Active-aging organizations and clinicians may want to apply to one part of the grand challenge: the Healthy Longevity Global Competition.

Stats: 40% of 65+ adults, caregivers say depression is normal with age

"Driving Towards Age-Friendly Care for the Future," a survey of more than 2,700 adults ages 65 and older and their caregivers, found that 40% considered depression a normal part of aging, and nearly 40% didn't know that certain prescription medications can impact cognition. The findings point to opportunities for active-aging organizations to educate staff, constituents and families about depression and its treatment, as well as mobility issues and, of course, dementia, which many survey respondents also felt were inevitable.
