Data on deaths from heart disease, stroke or hypertension was selected from the US National Vital Statistics System for the years 2001-2010. “Avoidable deaths” meant those that could be attributed to lack of preventive care addressing risk factors or timely and effective medical care.

Examples are brisk walking or “heavy” housework, dancing and playing sports The physical activity guidelines of most countries recommend a minimum of 150 minutes/week of moderate physical activity for older adults who are generally healthy.

Volunteering may enhance life satisfaction

A systematic review of 40 studies on the effects of volunteering was conducted. People who volunteered reported lower levels of depression, increased life satisfaction and enhanced well-being. There was no effect on physical health. The authors noted that better-designed research was needed since it remains unclear whether volunteering causes these benefits.
