ICAA Conference 2008: Delegates share experiences and expand horizons

Historic and happening San Antonio, Texas, welcomed almost 500 active-aging professionals when the Sixth Annual International Council on Active Aging Conference came to town in December. From the preconference workshops through the last educational seminars, the ICAA Conference always brings together presenters and delegates with a passion for older-adult wellness—plus a desire to connect and learn.

ICAA’s annual meeting takes place in conjunction with the Athletic Business Conference & Expo, one of the recreation and fitness industry’s largest conference providers. In San Antonio, the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center was where exhibitors, delegates and presenters gathered for the 2008 events. This building’s proximity to the city’s famous River Walk assured a lively environment whenever attendees ventured outside.

Industry directions: philosophy, roles and income for the wellness workforce by Patricia Ryan, MS

The philosophy of active aging—that people could, and should, stay involved and active as much as possible throughout the years—is still relatively new. So as organizations and individuals have embraced the concepts of active aging, they have had to examine how programs, activities and physical spaces can support quality of life for older adults. ICAA honors eight innovative offerings-986

ICAA honors eight innovative offerings

In the words of the late economist and marketing expert Theodore Levitt, “Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.” The active-aging industry, by its nature, is both. The professionals who shape this industry focus on possibilities and seek solutions to a myriad of challenges in older-adult health and well-being. As the industry has evolved, so too have the products and programs designed to promote whole-person wellness, independence and quality of life for adults ages 50 and older. These offerings are encouraging people of all ages and abilities to participate in life as fully as possible within the wellness dimensions, regardless of health conditions or socioeconomic status. This is how the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA) defines active aging.

Active Aging Week 2008 celebrates life-972

Active Aging Week 2008 celebrates life

The last week of September was filled with a mix of laughter and intense concentration, small steps and long strides as Active Aging Week, ICAA’s annual health promotion event, launched. Just as many more organizations offered events, so did the creative hosts expand the options for this year’s activities.

When industry professionals decide to host Active Aging Week, they can choose to offer one or more activities during the week. Many of the hosts registered their events with ICAA, which allowed the association to post their contact information on the consumer section of the ICAA website and to ask them to share stories of the events.

The value of partnerships for Active Aging Week by Patricia Ryan, MS

During ICAA’s annual health promotion campaign in September, the organizations that host Active Aging Week events have offered everything from health promotion lectures and exercise classes to dances and health fairs. One of the advantages of hosting an Active Aging Week event is that you are free to offer activities that fit well in your local area. That flexibility presents a great opportunity to team with others to plan the week.
