In a recent issue of ICAA Research Review (Vol. 14[27] September 2014), answers to a survey indicated that individuals who lived in countries where people at older ages had negative social status were more likely to have negative views of their health if they identified themselves as “old,” but if they lived in a country where older people had high social status, their perception of their health was not affected. A new report suggests that a positive image of aging can improve physical function.

Foot pain may be caused by poor fitting or high-heel shoes, poor posture, high-impact activities, health conditions such as arthritis or diabetes, and joint or skin problems (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). Foot pain affects about one in four people over age 65, according to background provided by authors of a new study, so they asked the question, “would properly fitting footwear affect foot pain?”

Less sitting and more physical activity improves brain structure

In the brain, white-matter fibers are the pathways of communication between brain regions. According to background in a new study, these fibers decline with age, and about 95% of adults 65 years and older have age-related changes in white matter, which are called lesions. The corresponding author noted that lesions are a normal part of aging, but their early onset or rapid accumulation may indicate problems.

When the vet prescribes, dogs and their owners start walking

Dog owners and their dogs were randomly assigned to a physical activity group or a usual care group. Veterinarians prescribed physical activity for 30 minutes each day to dog owners and their dogs using a standard script, and provided pedometers for the owners to measure the number of steps they walked. Prior to beginning, the owners reported their height and weight, and the dog’s condition was recorded.
