As the number of older adults increases, so does the number of misplaced car keys and forgotten names. As a summary of brain training research explains, the brain is a complex organ with over 100 billion nerve cells (neurons), linked by synapses and activated by neurotransmmitters. A research team wanted to look at the mechanisms behind the brain’s ability to improve memory ability following training in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition marked by a decline in thinking ability and memory that does not interfere in daily functioning. MCI can also be a precursor of dementia.
