Lots more steps needed to meet PA guidelines
With the support of the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology released new physical activity guidelines. To achieve health benefits, Canadians 18 years and older are encouraged to accumulate 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week in bouts of 10 minutes or more, along with strength training on at least two days/week. People 65 years and older are encouraged to add balance activities if they have mobility challenges.

Physical activity improves life for people with diabetes
Self-rated health is measured by the way people respond to the question, “In general, would you say your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, poor.” According to the Stanford Patient Education Research Center, this question has been shown to predict future health. Background in a study that relates self-rated health to people with diabetes further states that people with diabetes who rate themselves in the lower health categories may have diabetes-related complications such as lower extremity amputation, blindness, kidney failure and cardiovascular diseases.

Three good reasons to maintain physical activity in later life
The Nakanojo Study tracks the health and physical activity of the older population in Nakanojo, Japan. Residents ages 65 years and older wore specially adapted pedometer/accelerometers for 24 hours/day for one year. A synopsis of the results were published last year (Sports Medicine, 39[6]:423-438, 2009), and new analyses of the data have just been released.
