Minor weight loss lowers risk of osteoarthritis
A common result of the aging process, osteoarthritis can cause pain and functional limitations in the joints. Weight-bearing joints—the knees, hips and spine—are most often affected. In addition to age, risk factors for osteoarthritis include joint injuries or deformities, overweight and obesity, diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, and occupations that stress a joint.

Rate, but not number, of hip fractures declines in Canada
Using nationwide hospitalization data for Canada between 1985 to 2005, researchers found a total of 570,872 individuals were hospitalized for hip fracture. Over the 21 years, age-adjusted rates of hip fracture declined 31.8% in women and 25% in men. The largest percentage decrease was observed among individuals ages 55-64 years.
