Outpatient palliative care beneficial for Parkinson's disease

Outpatient palliative care was associated with better quality of life at six months compared to standard care, according to a randomized, controlled trial of 210 adults (mean age, 70; about 65% men) with Parkinson's disease and related disorders, half of whom received the intervention. Other improvements favoring palliative care included a lower burden of nonmotor symptoms (e.g., pain), less severe motor symptoms, and more willingness to complete advance directives.

Certain chronic illnesses linked to higher crash risk for older drivers

While some older drivers with chronic health conditions may cut back on driving, they still may be at increased risk of crashes when they do drive. Other drivers with similar medical issues may be at higher risk of crashing, but don't cut back on how often they drive, or how far, according to a recent study. Organizations may want to assess or monitor their constituents' driving abilities. This is especially true for those with depression, anxiety and stress, which were associated with a 23% increased crash risk, even among those who drove less.

Stats: 45% of workers nearing retirement worry about healthcare coverage

Many people in their 50s and early 60s worry about their health insurance status once they retire, according to a US national survey. Nearly half of respondents (45%) had low confidence in being able to afford health insurance during retirement, and 68% were concerned about potential changes to health insurance associated with changes in federal policies. Worse, Individuals with low confidence in
health insurance affordability were more likely to avoid medical care (13%) and avoid filling a prescription (12%) because of cost.

Tech Talk: AARP showcases age-tech at CES 2020

AARP highlighted age-tech at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, held January 7-10 in Las Vegas. In a detailed press release, the organization describes initiatives to promote startups in the field, programs underway, and products potentially suitable for the active-aging market. Of note, AARP launched the Alcove ™ playground, a developer ecosystem that makes it easy to build or integrate virtual reality experiences into the AARP VR platform, and collaborated with Games for Change on a challenge aimed at motivating developers to create VR experiences that might enhance quality of life for older adults. Products introduced include a neuromodulation wearable that uses pulsed light and sound to potentially reduce chronic severe pain, and an intelligent bracelet that can help a user feel colder or warmer.
