Environmental change threatens older adults; three actions recommended
The introduction to a new report contains the results of a web-based pilot survey of 1,258 people 55 years and older living in five countries (the authors emphasized this is not a representative group). The survey results indicated that older adults were concerned about the environment, the threat of climate change, and energy and water security.

Earlier this year, the results of the I’DGO studies in Europe (ICAA Research Review [12]17 May 2012) confirmed that neighborhood features and walkable access to local shops, services and green spaces doubled an older person’s chances of achieving recommended levels of ‘healthy walking,’ improved their level and range of activities, and increased feelings of life satisfaction.

Would older adults spend more time outdoors if the environment was right? The results of three studies among older adults in Great Britain were just released to answer that question. As the authors note, if an older person does not find it easy or enjoyable to get outdoors, they can spiral into poor physical health, less social contact with others and a reduced quality of life overall.

There are many factors that influence the environment’s relationship to health. In a compilation of research released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (Health and the environment: a compilation of evidence, March 2011), 15 environmental factors were assessed, including temperature, walkability, green space, housing condition, and overcrowding and hazards in/around the home.
