Big picture questions to inspire your blue-sky thinking by Patricia Ryan, MS

The framework of wellness dimensions has proven to be a valuable structure for supporting the philosophy of active aging. It is an appealing approach--one readily embraced from the start by the individuals and organizations that joined the International Council on Active Aging. But where was the framework to implement the active-aging philosophy within organizations, and within the lives of older adults? Through the years, ICAA has worked to provide that structure. First, by assuming that the diverse organizations providing services for older adults shared similar goals and formed a de facto active-aging industry. Second, by defining that industry. ICAA has gathered the thoughts of many people working in the industry through surveys, work groups and think tanks. The result? A combination of facts and forward-looking perspectives that provide a springboard for thinking about the next decade.

Across North America and beyond, organizations dedicated to older-adult wellness are getting ready to celebrate aging and living well with a bevy of opportunities for Active Aging Week. In 2016, the health-promotion event takes place September 25 through October 1. Pressure mounts in host organizations to finalize schedules and arrangements as the week approaches. There’s still time, however, for organizers who want to make late additions to their schedules, as well as those who decide to host the week at the last minute. Free resources and tools are available to help.

The trends have been constant over the past few years. Organizations are expanding their wellness programs by adding more classes and activities. New equipment and supplies are arriving. Employees, guests and others are using the facilities. Additional staff members are appearing. Yet, senior managers, along with directors and staff members, have commented in International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA) surveys that “space” and “lack of space” are ongoing challenges. Is there a contradiction here?
