Active Aging Week: Host perspectives paint a fuller picture

As Active Aging Week 2016 draws nearer, participating organizations will be busily planning schedules of events that are uniquely theirs--that’s part of the fun of hosting the annual health-promotion campaign that celebrates aging and living well. Many local hosts will share their experiences and photographs with the International Council on Active Aging, which organizes the initiative on a national level. Some stories will appear in the Journal on Active Aging’s article showcasing the successes and spirit of the week. But local hosts typically reveal more than their successes to ICAA. This article presents perspectives shared by five host organizations over the last few years. These case studies paint a fuller picture that may provide pointers and spark ideas for those participating in this year’s campaign.

With "a smile for everyone," Barbara Wilkerson is "a vibrant part" of the community at Atria Mableton, a property located in Austell, Georgia, on the outskirts of Atlanta. The Atria Senior Living community is one of five owned and operated in the Peach State by the Louisville, Kentucky-based provider. To promote a fulfilling life for residents, the community offers Atria’s Engage Life program. Wilkerson is a role model for engaged living.

Active Aging Week 2016: explore the possibilities

Experiences that help people to grow, learn, improve their health and discover meaningful new interests are part of a vibrant, active lifestyle-and Active Aging Week. A health promotion campaign that celebrates the positivity of aging and living well, Active Aging Week features a bounty of fun, educational events and activities offered by local hosts in a welcoming atmosphere. In 2015, an estimated 3,000-plus organizations in six countries hosted participants for a week of adventure. This year’s campaign encourages hosts and participants to "Explore the possibilities" to grow and live well that each day brings.

ICAA Champion: introducing Wayne Senior Center

Wayne Senior Center has served the residents of Pennsylvania's Delaware, Montgomery and Chester counties for more than 40 years. The nationally accredited senior center occupies a site near the "Main Line" train station in Wayne, an unincorporated community that is part of Radnor Township. Some 30,000 citizens live in the township, which encompasses suburban population centers like Wayne, as well as rural areas, according to its website. ... Wayne Senior Center's educational and recreational activities "ensure meaningful leisure time, promote health and wellness, encourage an active lifestyle, and provide a friendly environment for socialization." Executive Director Susan Shapiro adds, "Our center is the place where seniors become empowered to grow, develop and get involved."

The wellness workforce leads in job satisfaction by Patricia Ryan, MS

Why do you work at an organization serving older adults? Is it because you have a passion for the discipline or the people? Need a paycheck? And, while you are thinking about that, do you like your job? ... To understand how workers perceive their jobs, ICAA added questions on job satisfaction to the recent ICAA Salary & Benefits Survey, sponsored by Precor. It is the first time this type of information on the wellness workforce has been captured on a national level, across different organizations. Some of the results may surprise you.

Creating harmony at the ICAA Conference 2015

Music wove around the International Council on Active Aging Conference 2015, as befitted ICAA’s temporary home in New Orleans, Louisiana, a city noted for its musical tradition. The music of voices calling welcomes and hellos formed a chorus that filled the registration area as attendees arrived for the preconference workshops, Marketing Symposium, and their choice of 61 conference sessions.
