POLST helps ensure patient preferences during a medical emergency

A study of nursing home residents with medical order forms indicating their treatment preferences were three times more likely to have their current preferences documented in their medical record than residents without the forms, according to a study from Indiana University School of Nursing and IU Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute. Most likely, the findings are relevant to assisted living and dementia care organizations, as well.

Home-based cardiac rehab safe, beneficial versus no rehab

A six-month program of home-based mobile guided cardiac rehabilitation was safe and effective compared to no rehabilitation for more than 150 adults (median age, 72; 81% men), researchers in the Netherlands reported. The study was conducted before the pandemic, but is relevant now, and active-aging organizations can keep it in mind for residents.

Even standing still can be a health booster

Simply standing still was associated a with lower risk for mortality in a recent study of nearly 6,000 men women ages 63 to 97 in the US. Although epidemiological studies can't prove cause and effect, the intervention would be easy to implement - i.e., encourage constituents to stand while watching TV, listening to music or even reading.

Physical touch vital for physical health

Recent research has found that physical touch is associated with lower blood pressure, higher oxytocin levels, and better sleep, and that it also buffers stress. Now a study suggests that touch is also associated with a lower likelihood of inflammation, a key feature of many diseases. Of course, physical touch has been limited for many older adults during pandemic restrictions, and the authors offer some suggestions.

Tech Talk: Telehealth leaving some older adults behind

Two studies in a recent issue of JAMA Internal Medicine highlight that many older adults are being left behind as telemedicine and telehealth are rapidly becoming anchors during pandemic outbreaks. Certainly, community-dwelling older adults with lower incomes are likely to be affected; however, even some senior living communities, community centers and other organizations that serve older adults may lack the robust infrastructure to support virtual doctor visits that may be critical to their constituents' health and wellness.
