How and why to get your green team together by Ken Kramer-1815

How and why to get your green team together by Ken Kramer

Since our inception in 1975, Givens Estates has understood the importance of being good stewards of our environment. One might say it was simply an unwritten philosophy. We knew environmental stewardship was important but it had never been put into writing. In 2003, we rewrote our mission and philosophy statement to include wellness, and so it only made sense to include “environmental” as one of our seven dimensions.

If you have ever read a self-improvement book, I am sure it had a section that said to write down your goals, because if you don’t you will never achieve them. We were committed to environmental wellness and we knew it had to be a part of our written wellness philosophy statement. That way, it would always be before us.

The Mayflower's Live and Learn series enriches the lives of participants

The City of Winter Park, Florida, is primarily known as a desirable place to live, a center for arts and culture, and the home of one of America’s premier liberal arts colleges. Rollins College, founded in 1885, has topped the US News & World Report rankings of southern regional universities for the last eight years. Further, Rollins ranked second on the list for the previous 10 years. Since 2010, when the idea was proposed, this prestigious private institution has collaborated with The Mayflower continuing care retirement community, also in Winter Park, to deliver an “enrichment series” for residents.

Voices of Active Aging Week 2012-1543

Voices of Active Aging Week 2012

Active Aging Week®, the annual health promotion event promoted by the International Council on Active Aging®, is held every year during the last full week of September. This year’s theme, “Many journeys, many destinations,” recognized that older adults travel individual paths toward their personal destinations of well-being, health and ongoing engagement in life. According to many of the hosts who conducted Active Aging Week® events, their success began with the theme, and they stirred in the activities, locations and people best suited to their local area. That recipe resulted in a week of health-promotion-plus-fun events.

'CCRCs without walls' encourage aging in place, life care and wellness by Marilynn Larkin, MA

A trend by any other name is still a trend—and that’s the case for “CCRCs without walls,” also known as “life care at home,” “retirement community without walls” and “continuing care at home.” At the heart of the concept is “one-stop shopping” for a lifetime of care, according to Sarah Lentz Spellman, LNHA, director of ThirdAge, a division of the consulting firm CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP, in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Spellman helped start one of the first CCRCs without walls—Cadbury at Home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey—in 1998. Hired to serve as executive director, she developed “all the policies, procedures—everything it took to get the program up and running,” Spellman says. She now advises other organizations interested in setting up a similar model.
