People with knee replacements return to work

The most common cause of knee pain and disability is arthritis, reports the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Arthritis and injury are the primary reasons for a total knee replacement (TKR) surgery to replace damaged bones with metal implants cushioned by plastic spacers. The authors of a new study were interested in finding out if TKR surgery was effective in helping people return to their jobs.

In 2011 when the American College of Sports Medicine updated its exercise guidelines (MSSE, 43(7) July 2011), the writing committee added that sedentary behavior—sitting for long periods of time—is distinct from physical activity and may be an independent health risk factor that is not moderated by physical activity. A new study compared the amount of time spent in sedentary activities to the time spent in physical activity.

According to the recent ICAA Wellness Industry Development Survey 2012, nearly two-thirds (64%) of 554 organizations offer employee wellness programs. Employee programs were most frequently found in CCRCs, independent and assisted living communities, and parks and recreation. What do employees look for in programs? An unrelated survey of workers in the business world sought to find out.
