Stats: 35% of outdoor sports participants are older adults
The Outdoor Industry Association and Outdoor Foundation recently released findings from the "2023 Outdoor Participation Trends Report." The report reveals that the outdoor recreation participation base grew 2.3% in 2022 to a record 168.1M participants, or 55% of the US population over age 6. The report also found that the new participant base is becoming increasingly more diverse in terms of ethnicity, race, age, and sexual and gender identity.

Sleep "essential" for heart and brain health: AHA
The American Heart Association recently added sleep to its "Life's Simple 7" checklist as an eighth metric of cardiovascular health, transforming the checklist's name to "Life's Essential 8." Researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health evaluated the addition of sleep for predicting future cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a study of about 2,000 middle-aged to older adults (mean age, 69; 54%, women) who participated in a sleep exam and provided comprehensive data on their sleep characteristics in an ongoing US study of CVD and CVD risk factors. Taken together, the findings highlight the benefits to active-aging organizations of prioritizing sleep -- and conditions conducive to better sleep -- for members and residents.

Stats: Only 48% of older adults monitor blood pressure at home
Older adults with high blood pressure or a high blood pressure-related illness such as diabetes need to be educated about the importance of self blood pressure monitoring and sharing the readings with their doctor, researchers suggest. Doing so is associated with decreases in blood pressure and is cost-effective.
