Stats: Only 15% of adults get palliative care at home in last year of life
Starting palliative care in the months before death is linked to a more positive end-of-life experience, including improved quality of life, less anxiety, better pain and symptom management, and potentially less aggressive care at the end of life. However, Canadian estimates indicate that only 15% of people receive palliative care at home in the last year of life. It's an issue active-aging professionals should be aware of.

Tech: Virtual reality can relieve end-of-life pain
In a pilot study, researchers investigated the feasibility of a single virtual reality (VR) experience as a satisfying, and effective tool for end-of-life pain relief for individuals receiving palliative care in an inpatient setting. Forty-five participants (average age, 52; about half, women) were offered a one-time VR experience with a selection of several videos and games. Significant pain reduction was evident during and immediately after the experience. No serious side effects were reported during the intervention; however, afterwards, three patients were nauseous, to had headaches, and three had dry eyes.

Novel advance care planning approach favored in Canada
Researchers have developed a more effective way to support end-of-life planning in long-term care facilities in Canada. The study approach involves the individual whose care is being planned for each step of the way. The researchers had found that only 40% of facilities were routinely involving residents in end-of-life care discussions. The findings have implications for assisted living and dementia care, as well.
