Stats: Sitting less curbs blood pressure by 3.5 points
A recent study found that a health coaching intervention successfully reduced sitting time for a group of older adults by just over 30 minutes a day. Study participants also showed meaningful improvements in blood pressure, comparable to the effect of other interventions focused on physical activity. The intervention, called I-STAND, could be implemented easily in various active-aging settings.

Physical activity, inflammation tied to age-related skeletal changes
New research indicates that some age-related changes in gene and protein expression in the skeletal muscles of older individuals may be affected more by physical inactivity and chronic inflammation than aging alone. This intriguing finding means some aspects of aging may be changeable, or soon will be.

Daily walking curbs adverse effects of bedrest in the hospital
As little as 25 minutes a day of slow walking seems to be enough to counter the detrimental physical effects of bedrest on older hospital patients, according to a pooled data analysis of the available evidence. For optimal improvements in physical function, around 50 mins/day of slow walking or around 40 mins of combined physical activities, such as 20 minutes of resistance bands with around 20 minutes of aerobic activity, are the most effective.

Stats: 35% of outdoor sports participants are older adults
The Outdoor Industry Association and Outdoor Foundation recently released findings from the "2023 Outdoor Participation Trends Report." The report reveals that the outdoor recreation participation base grew 2.3% in 2022 to a record 168.1M participants, or 55% of the US population over age 6. The report also found that the new participant base is becoming increasingly more diverse in terms of ethnicity, race, age, and sexual and gender identity.

Midlife physical activity, healthy behaviors vital for active later life
In a study of close to 4,000 older adults (age range, 60-83; 25%, women). with accelerometer data, barriers associated with decreased physical activity and increased sedentary behavior in later life were already evident in midlife. This suggests that implementation in midlife of policies that integrate physical activity and other healthy behaviors may be an effective approach to promote an active lifestyle in older age, the authors said. The findings are especially important for independent living and for active-aging staff in midlife.

Moderate exercise curbs kidney function decline in sedentary older adults
A structured moderate-intensity physical activity and strength/flexibility program slowed kidney function decline compared with health education, an analysis of a randomized clinical trial showed. The authors conclude that clinicians should consider prescribing physical activity and moderate-intensity exercise for older adults for this purpose. The study involved sedentary older adults, so has implications across the active aging continuum.
