Walking, reminiscing boost brain health in older Black adults
An Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) research program that enlists older Black adults to walk through and reminisce about historically Black neighborhoods in Portland -- which now look very different after rapid change through gentrification -- may help improve cognitive function, a new study finds. The findings may have particular relevance for seniors centers, area agencies on aging and other community-based settings.

Community spaces may boost healthy aging for older non-white adults
Millions of Americans over the age of 65 lack access to the social and emotional support they need for healthy aging, and non-white individuals in rural communities are especially susceptible. Recent research from Penn State found that the presence of social infrastructure -- shared community spaces that are free or low cost to visit -- in these communities may help provide social and emotional support and promote healthy aging among older, non-white adults. Active-aging organizations might think about ways to help.

DEIB survey, toolkit released for senior living
The first diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) survey and toolkit for senior living was released November 9. The survey, conducted by Ferguson Partners, collected information across the participating companies and reviews both the degree to which DEIB programs are deployed and the diversity of their respective staff. The survey also indicated opportunities for senior living companies to give more focus to DEIB efforts. The DEIB Toolkit was developed for interested companies to customize programs suited to their respective firms.

Report reveals progress in US LGBTQ older adult experiences, services
While Minnesota is generally seen as a desirable place to age and live well, LGBTQ older adults, who came into adulthood at a different time than today's young adults, have had different experiences and haven't always had the same level of support as they've aged as other adults. To gain insight into these experiences, the University of Minnesota's Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program and Rainbow Health conducted research for the 2022 LGBTQ Aging Needs Assessment.
