WHO puts social participation at heart of health decision-making

For the first time in the World Health Organization (WHO)'s 76-year history, world leaders have unanimously committed to put social participation - people, communities and civil society - at the heart of health decision making processes. This landmark pledge marks an important step forward in creating a healthy world, experts said in an editorial published in the BMJ. Lack of friend or family visits linked to increased risk of dying-10190

Lack of friend or family visits linked to increased risk of dying

Not being visited by friends or family is associated with an increased risk of dying, according to researchers from Glasgow University, Scotland. The authors suggest that their findings could be used to help identify patients at a higher risk of dying due to social factors, and to develop more effective interventions to combat the increased risk of death associated with social isolation. Active-aging organizations might consider paying special attention to residents who don't receive friend or family visits and find ways to encourage such visits, even if it's from sharing this study.

Social media helps people feel connected to others

A new Gallup report, released in collaboration with Meta, found that despite social disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most people across the countries studied said they felt connected to others. The report is based on an in-depth, Meta-commissioned survey of people's social connections in Brazil, Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico and the United States. Representative population samples of least 2,000 people ages 15+ in each country, surveyed between April and June 2022, were included. The insights can help inform efforts to encourage social media interaction in active-aging communities.
