Beyond care: a wellness blueprint for addressing cognitive decline

Twice a year the International Council on Active Aging convenes meetings to discuss challenges facing the industry as well as solutions that would turn challenges into opportunities. The ICAA Forum in November 2014 cemented the association’s most recent focus—wellness and cognitive health. There, attendees unanimously agreed on the need for, and value of, wellness across the cognitive continuum. At the Spring 2015 Forum in April, attendees arrived ready to fulfill an ambitious goal: To develop a blueprint for bringing wellness-based programs and services to people with cognitive decline.

ICAA Champion: introducing the City of Salisbury's Jim Binder

For Jim Binder, "active aging means acting as a role model and encouraging others to take responsibility for their health and well-being. And it means being enthusiastic about aging, as well as the possibilities and opportunities that aging brings." The City of Salisbury's coordinator, Wellbeing Programs, encourages people to "challenge stereotypes that both portray older adults through a lens of decline and diminished value and emphasize the 'burdens' of growing old."

ICAA Champion: introducing Neal Gamsky

Dr. Neal Gamsky describes himself as “a high-energy person.” The 84-year-old leads an active life with Irene, his wife of nearly 60 years, at the Touchmark on West Prospect community in Appleton, Wisconsin. ... For Gamsky, active aging “means engaging yourself physically, mentally and emotionally in the community and for yourself.” He also finds that a positive attitude to aging makes a difference. “I’m trying to grow old cheerfully,” Gamsky stresses.

Living well in later life: It's this vision for older adults everywhere that inspires the International Council on Active Aging® and the ICAA community to strive to change the way we age. Active Aging Week® is a key avenue for outreach. The campaign website offers support materials to assist host organizations as they plan and promote their participation. Local event organizers will find additional resources and tools with Active Aging Week theme days.

ICAA Champion: introducing Iowa City Senior Center

Senior center coordinator Linda Kopping "feels fortunate" to be in Iowa City, Iowa-"a community that supports its older adults in such a positive and noteworthy way." The California-based Milken Institute recently placed Iowa City first on its list of "Best Cities for Successful Aging" (small metro), pointing to numerous enablers of successful aging. Additional community resources include a nationally accredited senior center whose mission is to promote optimal aging.
