At the end of March, the Annual Report to the Nation, published by a collaboration of multiple US agencies and organizations, included a special section on cancers that are associated with obesity and physical inactivity (ICAA Research Review, 12[14]). The report stated that deaths from cancer are declining, meaning more people are able to survive the disease.

The Healthy Eating Index was developed to look at a person’s overall diet, rather than concentrate on a single nutrient. Information used in the Index is collected during national surveys; respondents are asked to recall everything they ate or drank during the prior 24 hours. In 2008, the US Department of Agriculture released a report on the diet quality of older Americans using the Index.

According to background for a new study, antioxidants—such as vitamins C and E, carotenoids and flavonoids—can inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of cell-damaging free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them. It leads to inflammation, blood vessel damage and stiffening.
