Can social networking increase walking among dog owners?

Among 102 dog owners who were sedentary and lived in eight neighborhoods, a portion were randomly assigned to receive emails on increasing physical activity and the remainder were assigned to a Meetup Group. Meetup is a social networking website where anyone can invite neighbors to join a group. Participants in the Meetup Group received newsletters, information on dog walks and community events, and an activity monitor.

The closer to a Mediterranean diet, the better for cognition

At the start of the study, 2,326 people ages 70-79 years (38.2% Black) completed food frequency questionnaires, which were translated to MedDiet scores. Participants from a Black racial background, on average, ate more meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products while Whites ate more nonrefined grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and olive oil and drank more alcohol. Over eight years, cognitive status was assessed using the Modified Mini-Mental Examination.
