Expanding experiences during Active Aging Week by Kori Poplin-1456

Expanding experiences during Active Aging Week by Kori Poplin

•With more than 70% of the residents participating in our Fitness for Life program, we have created a culture of active aging at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury (RWC), a continuing care retirement community located in Irvington, Virginia. The daily routine for our 200-plus residents includes a variety of fitness classes and wellness activities to engage the mind, body and spirit. Our rural campus, with its mix of buildings linked with walking paths on the edge of a quiet lake, lends itself to active lifestyles.

Ironically, the idyllic location and everyday scheduling at RWC had presented a challenge for us when planning Active Aging Week in the past as our residents are focused on wellness and fitness each and every day. Consequently, during the first three years we hosted annual events to highlight the ICAA Active Aging Week we found residents and community members interested but not over-whelmingly enthusiastic about these special programs. For Active Aging Week 2011, however, we were determined to try a variety of new, different and rewarding opportunities to increase participation and stay true to the theme of expanding your experience.

Anchor Active Aging Week with a theme

Themes become the valuable anchor for both the content of an event, and the promotion. You use the theme to get people excited, choose activities, inspire volunteers and colleagues and even help with decorations.

Launching the next decade at the ICAA Conference 2011

That shared sense of purpose flowed among the delegates, presenters and exhibitors who joined together to create the International Council on Active Aging Conference 2011, held in Orlando, Florida, in ICAA’s 10th Anniversary year. ICAA sets the stage by organizing the annual conference of professionals. But it is the people and their interactions that define the conference experience. And this past December, that experience reflected the growth and maturing of active aging as a philosophy, and as an industry.

Expanding the experience of Active Aging Week-1403

Expanding the experience of Active Aging Week

The philosophy behind active aging is that every person can live fully, regardless of age, and be involved in life. For some older adults, that is a new concept. For others, the concept is attractive, but they are not sure how to go about it. That’s where Active Aging Week® comes in.

Active Aging Week is the annual health promotion observance of the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), held each year during the last week of September. What is unique about the week is that individuals and organizations decide how many events to offer and what type of activities will be available.

ICAA in 2011

On October 1, 2011, the International Day of Older Persons, the International Council on Active Aging® celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its founding. ICAA staff, advisors, members and allies work to spread the organization’s vision of Changing the Way We Age® and maximize opportunities for healthier, more vital aging. Throughout the year, Advisory Board and Visioning Board members joined ICAA colleagues to develop the five strategies resulting from the ICAA 2020 visioning process (sponsored by Morrison Senior Living), as outlined below.
