The value of lifestyle choices-including engaging in physical activity, eating well and building relationships- in promoting physical health have been shown repeatedly. For example, lifestyle choices can prevent chronic diseases (ICAA Research Review, 10[7] February 2010), and cardiovascular risk factors (ICAA Research Review, 10[11] April 2010 and 10[40] November 2010) among other benefits.

Before depression strikes, play a game
The term subsyndromal depression is used when a person has depressive symptoms, but they do not yet meet the clinical definitions of a disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, subsyndromal depression is common among older people and may increase the risk of developing major depression. Since physical activity can elevate mood, a research team wondered if video games could be used to encourage physical activity among older adults and consequently influence their feelings of well-being.
