A clinical review by geriatricians at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) finds that mobility limitations are a litmus test for healthy aging and urges primary care physicians to take a more aggressive role in ascertaining the mobility of older adults. The study was published recently in JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, as part of its continuing series, “Care of the Aging Patient.”

People with chronic musculoskeletal pain develop similar attitudes, according to a meta-ethnography of 77 studies. Meta-ethnography is a systematic approach to synthesizing qualitative research. The trends the authors found among people reporting chronic pain included feeling uncertain about the future, and being constantly aware of the pain restricting their bodies. They also felt it was impossible to prove that they had pain, and therefore their doctors and healthcare providers may not believe them.
