Once again, vegetables shown to lower risk for heart disease
The influence of diet on heart disease has been studied for many years, felt the authors of a new review, but the individual studies had not been collected into a single review. They noted that only the Mediterranean eating pattern has been evaluated through randomized controlled trials, which found a significant association with coronary heart disease. Their goal was to systematically review all the studies and analyze the associations.

Vitamin D emerges as a key to health
In recent years, older adults have been encouraged to maintain bone health with adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, which the body needs to absorb calcium (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases). Vitamin D maintains blood levels of calcium and phosphorous. Current guidelines recommend adults supplement with 400 international units per day for ages 51-70 and 600 international units per day for ages 71 and older. New research has indicated that vitamin D may have a broader role and be a factor in respiratory tract infections, like colds and flu, hip fracture, heart disease and other health conditions.

They wanted to know if augmenting food with supplements would enable older adults to meet recommended dietary intakes. The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) set by the US Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences were used for the analysis. The DRIs include:
