Psychological resilience tied to better walking ability after hip surgery
Community-dwelling older adults experiencing hip fracture often fail to achieve adequate walking capacity following surgery and rehabilitation. A study that included 210 community-dwelling adults ages 60+ who had surgery after hip fracture looked at the impact of psychological factors on post-fracture walking capacity.

Lifestyle, not age, may be key to dementia risk
Individuals with no dementia risk factors, such as smoking, diabetes or hearing loss, have similar brain health as people who are 10 to 20 years younger than they are, according to a Baycrest study. The study found that a single dementia risk factor could reduce cognition by the equivalent of up to three years of aging.

Gardening, art-making may cultivate better mental health
It's known that horticultural therapy can improve mental health among individuals with medical conditions, but a recent pilot study found that healthy people may also reap mental health benefits from working with plants - even if they've never gardened before. Specifically, the researchers found that among healthy women who attended twice-weekly gardening classes, the activity lowered stress, anxiety and depression. The comparison activity, art-making, also brought positive changes.
