Tech Talk: AI more effective than GP at diagnosing illnesses

A recent study showed for the first time that artificial intelligence (AI) was better than general practitioners (GPs) in diagnosing disease from written test cases. Forty-four GPs assessed an average of 159 cases each and achieved a mean score of 71.40%, whereas AI achieved 77.26%. The AI was integrated into a health app called Babylon. The AI will be included the publicly-available app following regulatory approvals in the UK and elsewhere, according to the company.

Intergenerational dementia education boosts knowledge, empathy

School-based dementia education could deliver much needed empathy and understanding for older adults, as research from the University of South Australia shows it can significantly improve dementia knowledge and awareness among younger people. Although many organizations are aware of the need for intergenerational education of this type, the study could provide additional motivation for including such programs, particularly after the pandemic or, possibly, via technology right now.

Sheltering in place tied to loneliness, depression

Older adults experienced greater depression and loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a study by Indiana University researchers, and relationship strength - i.e., perceived closeness to network members - moderated the relationship between loneliness and depression. Although the study reads as though the pandemic is over, that is far from the case right now. Therefore, active-aging organizations can help by ensuring as many social connection opportunities for their constituents as possible, especially through technology. It might help to monitor participation and intervene if a member or resident's social engagement appears to be dropping.

Older and younger drivers more apt to drive unsafe vehicles

Here's the kind of "intergenerational" news we can do without and need to take steps to avoid: A study from the Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found that teen drivers and drivers 65 years and older - two age groups at a higher risk of being involved in an automobile accident - are more likely to be driving vehicles that are less safe, putting them at even higher risk of injury. The findings underscore the need for these groups to prioritize driving the safest vehicle they can afford, according to the authors. Active aging organizations can play a role by becoming aware of which vehicles are less safe, and educating their constituents.

Stats: Virtual doctor visit only option for 30% during pandemic

By June 2020, 30% older adults had ever participated in a telehealth visit, according to the recent National Poll on Healthy Aging. Most of those visits were likely due to the pandemic, given that 25% of older people in the US had a virtual medical visit from March to June - much higher than the 4% of people over 50 who said they had ever had a virtual visit with a doctor in a similar poll taken in 2019. Further, 30% said that a virtual visit was the only option when they called to schedule an appointment.
