Workplace wellness is great, but don't make me do it

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of organizations serving older adults offer employee wellness programs, according to a survey of 554 respondents to an ICAA survey (ICAA Wellness Industry Development Survey 2012). Many employers offer wellness programs, but employees may not take advantage of them. A recent tactic is to incentive them by asking employees to pay a higher share of health insurance premiums if they do not participate or meet health goals, such as losing weight or lowering blood pressure.

Employee wellness programs often focus on managing chronic disease. As reported in ICAA’s “Growth of the Active Aging Industry in the US and Canada, 2014,” two reports from Rand Corporation identified health risk screenings, weight loss, smoking cessation and exercise programs as the most frequently offered workplace wellness programs. Typical goals are reducing absenteeism and improving productivity. Is chronic disease management the only factor of importance in workplace wellness?

In the chapter overviewing workplace wellness programs found in ICAA’s recent research publication, “Growth of the Active Aging Industry in the US and Canada, 2014," two reports from Rand Corporation identified the benefits offered in employee wellness programs. Those frequently offered benefits were health risk screenings, exercise programs, smoking cessation and weight loss programs. Workers who participated in the programs achieved statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in exercise frequency, smoking behavior and weight control, but not cholesterol control.
