Tech Talk: Wearable camera+ AI detect medical errors
Researchers have developed a wearable camera system that, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), detects potential errors in medication administration -- that is, when medications are given directly to people, usually in a healthcare setting or at home. Results of a pilot study show that the AI-driven video system recognized and identified, with high proficiency, medications being drawn in busy clinical settings, achieving 99.6% sensitivity and 98.8% specificity at detecting vial-swap errors.

Tech Talk: Wearable band gathers sweat, fitness biomarkers
Scientists have engineered a sweat-collecting, wearable band that can comfortably interface with the skin during exercise. In a pilot study involving 12 volunteers, the new device dynamically gathered sweat during cycling, and enabled researchers to noninvasively study changes in blood lactate, pH, and other key markers of fitness and health.

Tech Talk: A bionic leg made for walking
A neuroprosthetic interface allows a bionic leg to be fully responsive to the human nervous system, a new report suggests. The interface, made of surgically constructed agonist-antagonist muscle pairs that restore natural proprioception (the ability to sense limb position and movement), resulted in improved walking control in a clinical trial involving 14 people with below-the-knee amputation. The findings suggest that even partial reinstatement of neural signaling may be sufficient to enable improvements in neuroprosthetic functionality.

Tech Talk: Older-adult input needed for new tech
A new report, "The User Experience Needs an Upgrade -- May 2024," from Laurie Orlov's Aging and Health Technology Watch notes that the user experience is deteriorating. As Boomers age into their 80s over the next few years, their dependency on tech access will grow -- especially for services that are no longer in-person experiences. These include financial management, healthcare access, social networks and more. Most 65+ individuals today own smartphones in addition to other tech tools. However, the management of those tools may seem more complicated, and not designed with them in mind.
