Psychological factors help physical activity fend off depression/anxiety

The positive impact of physical activity on both mental and physical health are well-documented, point out the authors of a new study. However, what is less known is how and why physical activity reduces feelings of distress. For this study, the term “distress” meant symptoms of depression and anxiety. The team focused on the relationships among distress, physical activity, mastery (a sense of control) and self-esteem (feelings of self-worth).
