Soaring costs of obesity lead to call for community action

Obesity is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions and some cancers. The World Health Organization estimates that by the year 2015, more than 700 million adults will be obese, with a body mass index of 30 or higher. As reported recently in ICAA Research Review (9[25] 2009), 26% of US adults are obese. In Canada, 23.1% of adults are obese (Statistics Canada). As the number of people with obesity increases, so do health care costs.
