Exercise beyond physical activity key point in updated position stand
Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, “physical activity” refers to movement during daily activities such as housework or walking to the store, while “exercise” refers to movement that is planned, progressive and repetitive, such as strength training or walking for fitness. This distinction is one of the features of the updated Position Stand on exercise for apparently healthy adults published by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The Position Stand is consistent with the US Physical Activity Guidelines, plus it adds more specifics on types of exercise and length of time spent exercising.
