Cultural sensitivity needed to promote healthier eating
The risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) increases with age and with African-American heritage. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan has been shown to help people reduce blood pressure. DASH emphasizes eating fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds and nuts. The plan asks individuals to reduce their intakes of sweets, added sugars and sugary beverages, and red meats.
