In the brain, white-matter fibers are the pathways of communication between brain regions. According to background in a new study, these fibers decline with age, and about 95% of adults 65 years and older have age-related changes in white matter, which are called lesions. The corresponding author noted that lesions are a normal part of aging, but their early onset or rapid accumulation may indicate problems.
