Increasing longevity, and increasing concerns
In many countries of the world, longevity keeps increasing. For example, in the United Kingdom, life expectancy at birth has increased to the highest level on record. Baby boys can expect to live to 78.1 years and baby girls to 82.1 years. Among European Union countries (2009), France reports a life expectancy at birth of 85 years for women and 78 years for men, while Spain estimates 84.9 years for women and 78.7 years for men (UK Office for National Statistics).

Only a few weeks ago, another survey of people in the Boomer generation reported that 67% of 1,001 respondents said they would like to live to 100 so they could remain productive, establish deep relationships with family, witness new discoveries and experience many years of leisure (ICAA Research Review, 11[25] 2011). Can Boomers do anything to make that desire come true?

Dementia refers to a variety of symptoms of mental decline, including loss of memory, language and thinking skills and emotional functioning. Alzheimer’s disease is a well-known form of dementia (Alzheimer’s Research UK). The search is on to find ways to predict the onset of dementia and prevent or treat the condition. Looking at the problem from a new direction, a research team investigated nontraditional indicators of dementia.

Data has also just been released from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey, where trained interviewers speak with household members 18 years and older. This is an early release, before final weighting and editing, to update 15 health indicators.
