In mid-life, generally 45-64 years old, women are in a period of transition. Family responsibilities, sometimes for both children and older relatives, careers and jobs, and physical changes can make it challenging for women to engage in physical activity. The authors of a recent study also point out that women in Western culture are constantly being reminded of an ideal of youth and thinness.

Walking is one of the most frequently suggested ways for older adults to become more physically active. Walking to the store and taking the stairs instead of the escalator are typical suggestions. Nearly half (49%) of Canada’s population ages 20 years and older said they were at least moderately active, reported the 2002/03 Canadian Community Health Survey. In this survey, “moderately active” could be achieved by walking for 30 minutes each day. What leads to reaching recommended levels of physical activity?
