It’s no surprise that the concerns and interests of the aging population are getting a lot of attention. The US Census Bureau estimates that in 2009, there were 72 million people 55 years and older in the US—a large population that will increase each year. The global population of older people is growing at an accelerated rate of 2.6% per year compared to the other ages, a group growing at a rate of 1.2% per year (United Nations, 2009).

Staying active for a longer life

Between 1981-2007, the Leisure World Cohort Study captured the health outcomes of residents of a large retirement community in Southern California. After enrollment of the initial 13,978 participants (8,877 female and 5,101 male), follow-up was maintained through periodic mail surveys and searching public records, including death certificates. Participants were asked about their health status, activities and eating patterns.

In Canada, just over 1.3 million people reported having at least some Aboriginal ancestry (North American Indian, Métis or Inuit) in 2001, representing 4.4 % of the total population (Statistics Canada). In 2009 in the United States, an estimated 5 million people reported being American Indians and Alaska Natives, including those of more than one race, representing 1.6% of the total population (US Census Bureau). A special issue of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology explores aging and health among the indigenous people of North America.
